[Studio Visit]

A Closer Look at Familiar Plants: Visiting KIM Soohyun’s Studio

Ahead of KIM Soohyun’s solo exhibition in October, I visited her studio on June 22. Known as the “Second Studio,” the space caught my eye from the entrance, with its collection of small, charming objects. Inside, paint tubes hanging on the wall and trailing plants came into view.

The artist showed me a range of works, from a watercolor painting of a bird of paradise flower attached to the wall with masking tape, to a still life of tulips against a pink wall, and a framed, finely detailed colored-pencil drawing of an artichoke. The artichoke was particularly striking. Layer by layer, the artist had built up not only the rough texture of its outer bud but also the purplish patterns within its cut surface, revealing a close and attentive observation of the plant.

As the artist explained, she is more drawn to roots that have grown through the soil and surfaces marked by imperfections than to flowers at the height of their bloom. The works in her studio reflected this way of seeing, presenting familiar plants in their many different forms.

A plant observed closely over time can reveal an expression we had not noticed before. KIM Soohyun builds up thin colored-pencil lines, layer by layer, to capture the plants as she encounters them. The works I encountered in her studio are now on view at Marina Gallery.

Always Beside Us

Time Shared with Plants

We often remember flowers for the vivid moment they bloom. Yet for plants, the time spent growing, enduring, and withering is far longer than the time they spend in bloom.

The artist turns her gaze toward this passage of time. Plants taking root in the darkness beneath the soil, purple kohlrabi with its blemishes still intact, and wrinkled leaves—ordinary things encountered in everyday life—become the subjects of the work. Rather than perfectly formed plants, the artist is drawn to the traces left by each one as it lives in its own place and in its own time.

Layering colored-pencil lines one by one onto paper is akin to tracing the time a plant has lived through. Through these accumulating lines, the plants we might otherwise overlook in everyday life acquire their own expressions and come to stand before us as distinct presences.

These drawings go beyond an observation of plants to become landscapes that evoke someone who has lived through another day. In time, the plants wither and return to the soil, but the warmth left within the drawings remains beside us.

There are things always beside us that we have failed to recognize as precious simply because they have always been there. May this exhibition invite us to look anew at the familiar and to encounter the individual time and traces held within it.
