그을림 이후 | After the Glow 정학현 조각전 2026. 5.7 — 5.31

20여 년간 철의 물성을 탐구해온 조각가 정학현의 제14회 개인전.

금속을 자르고, 달구고, 이어 붙이는 치열한 시간의 응축 속에서, 단단한 물질에 깃든 인간의 부드러운 온기와 삶의 깊이를 드러낸다.

작품 속 가느다란 '서 있는 사람'은 특정 인물이 아닌, 시간과 공간의 좌표 위에 놓인 인간의 보편적 상태를 환기하는 조형적 기호다. 조각이 만들어내는 여백과 그림자는 관람자가 그 공간 안에서 함께 호흡하는 장(Field)으로 확장된다.

작업실의 고요한 불꽃이 만들어낸 은은한 빛(Glow)이, 5월의 마리나 갤러리를 찾는 이들의 마음에 따뜻한 위로로 닿기를 바란다.

— 겨울, 정학현의 작업실에서 —

지난겨울, 작업실을 찾았습니다. 차가운 햇살 아래 서 있던 브론즈 조각 하나.

작업실까지 찾아와 주었다며, 작가는 담담하면서도 따뜻하게 맞이해 주었습니다.

벽면을 가득 채운 철선 드로잉들, 그 사이에 작게 서 있는 사람들.

바깥은 겨울이었지만 작업실 안에는 불꽃을 견뎌낸 온기가 있었습니다.

5월 7일부터 마리나 갤러리에서, 그 온기를 만나실 수 있습니다.

Last winter, I visited the studio of sculptor Hakhyun Jeong.

A bronze figure stood at the entrance, holding the weight of years within its form.

He welcomed me warmly, pleased that I had come all the way to his studio.

The walls were covered with iron wire drawings — small figures standing still in the spaces between lines.

It was winter outside, but inside the studio, there was a warmth that only fire can leave behind.

This May, that warmth comes to Marina Gallery.

그을림 이후 | After the Glow

작업실 벽면을 가득 채운 무수한 철선 드로잉들 --- 허공에 그려진 수많은 '서 있는 사람'들의 궤적은, 작가가 긴 시간 동안 얼마나 치열하게 인간 존재의 본질을 붙들고 씨름해왔는지를 웅변한다.

그에게 철의 절단과 용접은 단순한 제작 기법을 넘어, 삶의 유한성과 존재의 의미를 탐구하는 수행적 행위에 가깝다. 돌과 브론즈를 거쳐 스테인리스 스틸이라는 단단하고 차가운 물성에 도달하기까지, 그는 재료의 물성과 한계를 시험하며 자신만의 독창적인 조형 언어를 축적해 왔다. 작업실 한편에 놓인, 세월의 흔적을 고스란히 품은 거친 질감의 초기 용접 조각들은 그가 통과해온 시간의 깊이를 짐작하게 한다.

이번 전시의 제목 “그을림 이후 / After the Glow”는 금속을 자르고, 달구고, 이어 붙이는 그 치열한 시간의 응축이다. 작가에게 '그을림'은 고통의 흔적이 아니라, 모진 풍파를 견디며 스스로의 색을 획득해가는 과정이다. 그것은 삶의 시간을 묵묵히 통과한 뒤에야 비로소 남는, 숭고한 '존재의 온기'이기도 하다.

작품 속에 반복적으로 등장하는 가느다란 '서 있는 사람'은 특정 인물의 재현이 아니다. 이는 시간과 공간의 좌표 위에 놓인 인간의 보편적 상태를 환기하는 조형적 기호다. 절제된 선과 구조로 이루어진 형상들은 서사를 설명하기보다, 존재 그 자체에 대한 깊은 사유의 여지를 남긴다.

이번 전시에서 주목할 또 하나의 층위는 조각이 만들어내는 '여백과 그림자'다. 비어 있는 공간은 단절이 아닌 관계의 통로로 작동하며, 벽에 드리워진 그림자는 실체와 허상이 교차하는 또 하나의 '장(Field)'을 형성한다. 이로써 조각은 하나의 오브제를 넘어, 관람자가 그 공간 안에서 함께 호흡하고 경험하는 공간적 장으로 확장된다.

직선으로 구획된 차가운 세계 속에서 우리는 각기 다른 곡선을 그리며 살아간다. “그을림 이후”는 그 궤적들이 스쳐 지나가는 자리에서, 단단한 물질 속에 깃든 인간의 부드러운 온기와 삶의 깊이를 드러낸다. 작업실의 고요한 불꽃이 만들어낸 이 은은한 빛(Glow)이, 5월의 마리나 갤러리를 찾는 이들의 마음에 따뜻한 위로로 가 닿길 바란다.

After the Glow

The countless iron wire drawings covering the walls of his studio - the traces of so many 'standing figures' drawn in midair - speak eloquently of how fiercely and for how long the artist has wrestled with the essence of human existence.

For him, the cutting and welding of iron goes beyond mere technique. It is closer to a meditative act of inquiry into the finitude of life and the meaning of existence. From stone to bronze, and finally to the cold, unyielding materiality of stainless steel, he has tested the limits of each medium, accumulating his own distinctive sculptural language. The rough-textured early welding pieces that sit in a corner of his studio - bearing the marks of years - hint at the depth of time he has passed through.

The title of this exhibition, After the Glow, is a condensation of that fierce time spent cutting, heating, and joining metal. For the artist, 'scorching' is not a trace of pain, but a process of acquiring one's own color through enduring hardship. It is also a sublime 'warmth of existence' - one that remains only after quietly passing through the time of life.

The slender 'standing figure' that recurs throughout his work is not a representation of any specific person. It is a sculptural sign that evokes the universal condition of human beings placed on the coordinates of time and space. Rather than explaining a narrative, the forms - composed of restrained lines and structures - leave room for deep contemplation of existence itself.

Another layer worthy of attention in this exhibition is the 'void and shadow' created by the sculptures. Empty space functions not as disconnection but as a passage of relation, while the shadows cast on the wall form another 'field' where the real and the illusory intersect. In this way, the sculpture expands beyond a single object into a spatial field in which the viewer breathes and experiences together.

In a cold world divided by straight lines, we each trace our own curves. After the Glow reveals, in the places where those trajectories pass, the soft warmth of humanity and the depth of life that dwells within hard matter. May the gentle light born from the quiet flame of the studio reach the hearts of all who visit Marina Gallery this May, as a warm consolation.
